A Book Look

I used to read, a LOT.

You know, REALLY read.  Actual physical books.  When I was a preteen  I would stay up all night until I finished a book.  It was almost always a scary story; Goosebumps, collections of ghost stories, some kind of monster after a girl near my age, anything that would surely give me nightmares.

As I’ve gotten older, I still love a good boogeyman, but more than a boogeyman, I love the thrill of realistic scary things.  When I feel like I can put myself into a character, into their shoes and say, this could actually happen, it is even scarier.  Even if I can’t picture myself in their shoes, it’s still great.  I also really like true crime, because THAT is the stuff of nightmares.  Those aren’t a Slenderman (although sometimes it is) or a chupacabra; these are real people, doing really bad things to other very real people.  I like reading about it because I like to know the ins and outs of really weird things.

So, a few years ago I was determined I was going to get into reading again.  And I was going to do it like a proper adult and do it digitally.  So Dax got me a paperwhite Nook.  It’s one of the original versions but it’s perfectly great for me.  I got a couple of books on there, a lot of Chelsea Handler (because I really love her so much) and I’ve gotten a couple of sewing books, I even got the entire Wizard of Oz collection of like, ten or so books for .99!  I plan on reading the whole series to a little person some day.  I read through the first book, and I got a good bit through the second but sewing called me away.

I saw a trailer for a movie that is coming out next month, The Girl on The Train, and it says “based on the thriller that shocked the world” and I said oh so it’s a book.  I haven’t heard much hype about this movie, but this trailer is so good.  So I pulled out my Nook, found the book, downloaded it, and I started reading it.

It’s been a long time since a book has had me so pulled in.  I will actually look at the clock and say “okay time to stop sewing to go read.”  I’m not finished with this book, so I’m not going to spoil anything.  Here’s what I gathered from just watching the trailer:

  • There’s a woman that rides a train
  • She watches a couple from the train
  • The woman from the couple goes missing
  • The woman on the train seems to have a drinking problem
  • Dramatic, much better version of “Heartless” by Kanye West

I’m not going to tell you anything else about this book, or the movie because I don’t want to spoil it…and I’m not done with it.  I am trying to finish this book up so that I can go watch the movie when it comes out next month.

I know this isn’t typically something I’d write about here, but I wanted to share it because it has been taking up a lot of my time lately.  I’m not a book reviewer or anything, I just really like this book.  I’m still working on lots of projects, and I’m doing lots of fairs, so I have long blogs in the works that won’t come out quite yet.  I  hope you’re all having a great week!  I’ll have a real blog next week, I promise.

Until next time, happy sewing!
